Every week I speak to business owners who are investing in SEO but have never once appeared in an AI answer. And every week I speak to others who assume AEO is just SEO with a new name. It is not and the distinction matters more than most people realise.

If you have read my previous post on AEO you already know why it matters. This post focuses on one specific question that comes up constantly from UK business owners: if I already do SEO, do I need to do something different for AEO? Or is it the same thing?

The short answer is no, they are not the same thing. They share a foundation but require different strategies, different technical implementations and different ways of measuring success.

The fundamental difference in one sentence

SEO asks: is this page relevant to this keyword?

AEO asks: does this page definitively answer this question?

That difference sounds subtle. In practice it changes almost everything about how you approach your content and your website.

How SEO works

SEO builds authority through backlinks, other websites linking to yours signal to Google that your content is trustworthy and worth ranking. It optimises pages for specific keyword phrases. It measures success in rankings and organic traffic. And it competes for position in a list, if you are in the top three results you get most of the clicks, if you are on page two you get almost none.

SEO has been the dominant discipline of digital marketing for over twenty years. It is well understood, widely practised, and extremely competitive in most UK sectors. Reaching the top three results for a competitive keyword takes months or years of sustained effort and ongoing investment.

How AEO works differently

AEO builds authority through entity signals, consistent, accurate business information appearing identically across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, industry directories and every other platform where you exist online. AI models cross-reference all of these sources to verify who you are and whether you can be trusted as a source.

It optimises content for specific questions rather than keywords. It measures success in citations, how often AI models mention your business when answering relevant questions. And it does not compete for position in a list, it competes to be synthesised into a direct answer. One answer. Two or three sources cited. Everyone else invisible.

The page that gets cited in an AI answer might not even rank in Google's top ten. It just needs to be the most precise, well-structured, factually accurate answer to the specific question being asked.

Where SEO and AEO overlap

Both disciplines reward high-quality, accurate, well-structured content. A website with strong SEO, clear pages, fast loading, well-organised information is also well positioned for AEO because AI models reward the same qualities Google rewards: clarity, accuracy and genuine helpfulness.

Both require consistency over time. Neither delivers overnight results.

And both reward businesses that answer their customers' questions better than anyone else. The insight behind both disciplines is identical, be the most helpful, most accurate, most authoritative source for the questions your customers are asking. How you achieve that in technical terms differs. The underlying goal does not.

The practical differences in implementation

Keywords vs. questions. SEO keyword research identifies terms people type into Google — "accountant Birmingham", "employment solicitor Manchester". AEO content research identifies the full questions people ask AI — "what should I look for when choosing an accountant for my limited company?" and builds content that answers those questions precisely and completely.

Backlinks vs. entity consistency. Building SEO authority requires acquiring backlinks from other websites, a time-consuming, ongoing process. Building AEO authority requires ensuring your business information is consistent and complete everywhere it appears, a one-time setup that requires periodic maintenance.

Page optimisation vs. schema markup. SEO page optimisation involves placing keywords in titles, headings and body text in a way that signals relevance to Google's algorithm. AEO requires schema markup, structured code that tells AI models exactly what your business is, what services you offer, where you are, and who you serve with machine-readable precision.

Traffic metrics vs. citation metrics. You measure SEO success by tracking keyword rankings, organic traffic and click-through rates. You measure AEO success by tracking citation rate, how frequently AI models mention your business along with sentiment (positive, neutral, or negative) and position within the AI answer.

Do you need both?

Yes, and you need GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) too.

SEO remains essential. Google's traditional results still account for the majority of search traffic. Abandoning SEO to focus exclusively on AEO would be a mistake.

But AEO is now an urgent priority for UK businesses because AI search is growing fast and the window to establish early visibility is closing. The businesses building AEO authority now will be very difficult to displace later. The cost of being early is low. The cost of being late when competition is fierce and every sector has established AEO players will be high.

The good news is that the work overlaps significantly. High-quality content that answers real questions precisely is the foundation of both. Start there and build the technical implementations, schema markup, entity establishment, llms.txt on top.

Frequently asked questions

If I already do SEO, do I need to do something different for AEO?

Yes. They are not the same thing. They share a foundation but require different strategies, different technical implementations and different ways of measuring success. SEO asks whether a page is relevant to a keyword, whereas AEO asks whether a page definitively answers a question, and that difference changes almost everything about how you approach your content and your website.

How is authority built differently in AEO compared with SEO?

SEO builds authority through backlinks from other websites, an ongoing and time-consuming process, and competes for a position in a list of results. AEO builds authority through entity signals, meaning consistent and accurate business information appearing identically across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and industry directories, and competes to be synthesised into a single direct answer citing two or three sources.

How do I measure whether AEO is working?

You measure SEO success by tracking keyword rankings, organic traffic and click-through rates. You measure AEO success by tracking citation rate, meaning how frequently AI models mention your business, along with sentiment, whether positive, neutral or negative, and position within the AI answer.

Should I stop doing SEO and focus on AEO?

No. SEO remains essential because Google's traditional results still account for the majority of search traffic, so abandoning it would be a mistake. AEO is an urgent priority because AI search is growing fast and the window to establish early visibility is closing, but the work overlaps significantly, since high-quality content that answers real questions precisely is the foundation of both.
